What is MRI-Guided Breast Biopsy?
Breast abnormalities that can only be detected on MRI need to be biopsied under MRI guidance (i.e., to guide the physician's instruments to the specific area in question). Your doctor will remove a tissue sample and examine it under a microscope to determine whether the growth is benign or cancerous.
MRI-Guided Biopsy is less invasive than surgical biopsy and only requires a local anesthetic to numb the biopsy site. In addition, the procedure leaves little to no scarring.

What should I expect during the procedure?
Because MRI-Guided Biopsy is less invasive than surgical biopsy, it is an outpatient procedure and requires only a local anesthetic to numb the biopsy site.
The affected breast or breasts are positioned into the cut-out, cushioned area, and the breast is compressed. MRI imaging is used to guide an MRI-safe needle to the exact location. Once proper placement is confirmed, the needle will remove some tissue from the area in the breast.
When the biopsy is complete, a marker clip may be placed in the area of interest. If placed, a post-procedure mammogram will be completed to confirm that the marker clip is in the proper position. The biopsy specimen is then sent to the laboratory for processing.
How long will the procedure take?
An MRI-Guided Biopsy can be completed in 60 minutes or less.
What should I expect after the procedure?
Our staff will discharge you and review post-procedure instructions. Some restrictions may apply; however, you may return to most normal daily activities.
How do I find out the results?
The laboratory will send your referring physician a report, and he or she will discuss the results with you.
